As for other temples in Avila, it is suspected that it was built on the remains of a previous Romanesque temple.</p> <p>Sponsored by the nobleman Juan N&uacute;&ntilde;ez D&aacute;vila, it dates from the 15th century. In 1582 the chancel was built in granite masonry, and the sacristy was completed in 1590. What was to be the only nave would be excessively reduced with respect to the disproportionate chancel, so this nave would be raised, building the choir, the side chapels, and rebuilding the belfry.</p> <p>The main facade is built in brick, with the exception of the main door, an arch of granite ashlar masonry berroque&ntilde;o. The main chapel responds to a Herrerian Renaissance style of great austerity.</p> <p>The nave is covered by a Mudejar coffered ceiling of the early sixteenth century, and the head has a hemispherical dome, divided into eight sections by ribs, and supported on pendentives.</p> <p>It was declared a National Monument on April 9, 1992.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div>
