The history of Portimão is intertwined with the natural resources of the Mediterranean matrix of its territory and with the strong river and maritime relationship. In this context, since antiquity, the processes of transformation and conservation by salt and later, an important fishing and canning industry that occupied the banks of the Arade appear. In 1996, the need to preserve all this historical relationship motivated the acquisition of the old fish canning factory “São Francisco”, located on the riverfront of the city. It is from this renovated factory building that the Portimão Museum emerges in 2008, a center for cultural dissemination and a space for discovering the origins and evolution of the community, its territory and the most striking aspects of its industrial and maritime history.(automatic translation)
