Located on the site of an ancient Phoenician village, Palácio da Galeria is the central nucleus of the Municipal Museum of Tavira, opened in 2001, after rehabilitation works. It hosts exhibitions that address the history and diversity of the county's heritage, also taking into account the new artistic expressions of contemporary times. The baroque building marks the time when it was acquired and inhabited by the illustrious magistrate João Leal da Gama e Ataíde, who promoted its reconstruction in the mid-18th century.
