O Parque e Palácio de Monserrate, testemunhos ímpares dos ecletismos do século XIX, foram imaginados por Gerard DeVisme que no séc. XVIII alugou a quinta à família Melo e Castro. Foi sucedido por William Beckford, que também aqui viveu, e por Francis Cook. Foi Francis Cook, o 1º Visconde de Monserrate, que criou os cenários contrastantes que caracterizam o parque, onde se sucedem caminhos sinuosos por entre ruínas, recantos, cascatas e lagos, bem ao estilo romântico da época. O Palácio combina influências góticas, indianas e sugestões mouriscas, bem como motivos exóticos e vegetalistas que se prolongam harmoniosamente no exterior. Os jardins receberam mais de 2500 espécies vindas de todo o mundo e foram organizados por áreas geográficas.
